Votes for Women

A widely distributed “Votes for Women” china was commissioned by Newport socialite Alva Belmont (1853-1933), who was a major figure in the American women’s suffrage movement. I encountered the china on a visit to Mrs. Belmont’s Marble House Estate Museum in Rhode Island and incorporated it in this photography project as an anchor, a reminder that equal rights should be as much part of daily life as everyday china. It is a salute to the willingness of the women of the suffrage movement to challenge convention.
