Wearing Up

For A Yellow Rose project, I photograph my mother and aunt’s dresses and other garments as metaphors for the toughness and resilience of women: for the suffragists whose hard fought fight led to the ratification of the 19th amendment; and for all women who continue to work tirelessly for parity in the workplace, in government, and at home. My mother and aunt had careers in the women’s dress manufacturing business, in sales and design respectively, in post WWII NYC, a time when there were few women in their positions. Hand-sewn hems, solid pleats, and worn sleeves represent the competence and grit of their generation and of every generation of women who continue to work towards equality for all.
